Methinks He Doth Protest Too Much

Pingree's Potato Patch
Studying the Economics of Detroit

The reliable Crain's Detroit has a story today with the title "Tax bill jumps 14,000% for Plymouth Twp. company", due to the recent replacement of the Single Business Tax. Call me callous, but I have two main thoughts: More...

  1. The company had previously been paying roughly $1200 per year. Given that Mary and I pay several hundred dollars a year (I can't recall precisely how much) on several orders of magnitude less income, the headline seems like a serious abuse of statistics.
  2. I really have to wonder about the stability of a business that its viability is threatened by a rise in costs of less than 1% of revenues.
